Job Description

As a mechanical engineer at Rigorous, you will be responsible for assisting in the design, prototype, and development of mechanical components of automated robotic systems. Your expertise will be vital in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of mechanical systems, meeting project objectives, and contributing to overall engineering excellence. You’ll work primarily at the Rigorous facility with occasional travel required for testing, installations, and service. As our team grows, you’ll collaborate with systems engineers, robotics engineers, software engineers, and technicians.

Responsibilities

  • Take charge of the mechanical initiatives at Rigorous, working closely with stakeholders to formulate an execution strategy aimed at achieving all project milestones
  • Oversee contractors and manufacturers responsible for executing mechanical design and fabrication, ensuring we hit specified timelines.
  • Work to stand up and streamline internal systems to improve communication, scalability and overall organization of the mechanical department. 
  • Work with the engineering team to develop and refine mechanical system designs that meet project specifications, performance & manufacturability requirements, and industry standards.
  • Design, analyze, develop, test, and integrate mechanical and electrical systems for autonomous robots.
  • Assist in the design and modification of engineering drawings, schematics, and technical drawings using computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Conduct FEA simulations, calculations, and tests to determine the functionality, performance, and reliability of mechanical components and systems.
  • Develop and maintain project documentation, including design records, reports, test procedures, and change control documentation.
  • Direct and coordinate manufacturing support, documentation, and testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Develop and maintain Rigorous design, production, testing, and maintenance systems.
  • Support clients, operators, and Rigorous technology in the field.
  • Write and maintain documentation and knowledge base materials.
  • Partiticate in all aspects of Rigorous projects from design and production to testing and integration.

Requirements

  • Degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, math, physics, or similar field. Technical degrees will also be considered.
  • A minimum of four years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer or equivalent in a related engineering role.
  • Experience working on large mechanical assemblies or functioning as an engineering lead for assembly teams & technicians is a plus.
  • Proficiency in OnShape Mechanical or similar CAD design software, including drafting, preparing drawings for production, FEA, and simulations.
  • Strong working knowledge of ASME drawing standards, GD&T and experience producing drawings for:
    • Machined Parts (milling and lathe operations)  
    • Sheet Metal
    • Weldments (with & without high precision secondary machine operations)
    • Assemblies
    • Plant Layouts
  • Clear understanding of the Linux operating system, embedded systems, and embedded Linux is a plus. 
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and analytically.
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities, with strong technical writing skills.
  • Experience with simulation, modeling, and analytical software (e.g., SimScale, Python )
