Job Description
We are seeking a skilled and highly motivated Mechanical Engineer to join our team. As a mechanical engineer at Rigorous, you will be responsible for executing design, analysis, prototyping, development and installation of mechanical components of automated robotic systems. Your expertise will be vital in ensuring the efficient and effective operation of mechanical systems, meeting project objectives, and contributing to overall engineering excellence. You’ll work primarily at the Rigorous facility with travel required for testing, installations, and service. As our team grows, you’ll collaborate with systems engineers, robotics engineers, software engineers, and technicians.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the design, analysis, development, and deployment of large-scale, industrial mechanical systems.
- Collaborate with the engineering team to develop and refine mechanical system designs that adhere to project specifications, performance and manufacturability requirements, and relevant industry standards.
- Work with team members to define project requirements; ensure system designs satisfy these requirements and secure stakeholder consensus for necessary refinement.
- Serve as the primary custodian for the design and modification of engineering drawings, schematics, and technical drawings utilizing computer-aided design (CAD) software.
- Lead the mechanical initiatives at Rigorous, collaborating closely with stakeholders to formulate an execution strategy aimed at achieving all project milestones.
- Manage project tasks, communicate status updates via project management software and meetings, prioritize activities, and escalate issues as required.
- Conduct Finite Element Analysis (FEA) simulations, calculations, and tests to determine the functionality, performance, and reliability of mechanical components and systems.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive project documentation, including design records, reports, test procedures, and change control documentation.
- Direct and coordinate manufacturing support, documentation, and testing activities to ensure compliance with specifications and customer requirements.
- Travel to provide support to clients, operators, and Rigorous technology in the field.
- Participate in all facets of Rigorous projects, encompassing design, production, testing, and integration.
- Work to establish and streamline internal systems to enhance communication, scalability, and overall organization within the mechanical department.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent.
- A minimum of five years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer or equivalent in a related engineering role.
- Experience designing complex mechanical parts and assemblies, including:
- Weldments (with & without high precision secondary machine operations)
- Machined Parts (milling and lathe operations)
- Sheet Metal
- Plant Layouts
- Comprehensive knowledge of mechanical systems, including but not limited to bearings, guidance mechanisms, fastening systems, load isolation systems, gearing, and drive components.
- Experience designing and specifying mechanical and electrical components including AC and DC motors, gearboxes, pneumatic and hydraulic actuators and valves, cable routing, and wire management.
- Expertise in CAD design tools, preferably OnShape, including sheet metal, large assemblies, and detailed manufacturing drawings.
- Strong working knowledge of ASME drawing standards and GD&T.
- Adept analytical skills including statics, dynamics, and thermodynamics. Ability to perform FEA analysis (Solidworks Simulation, Onshape Simulation, or equivalent) on complex parts and assemblies.
- Comfort and experience with a variety of hands-on fabrication and assembly tasks. Proficiency with hand tools, fabrication equipment (drill press, 3D printing equipment, etc.). Expertise in detailed mechanical and electrical assembly.
- Experience working on large electro-mechanical assemblies in industrial environments.
- Project management experience including ownership and coordination of interrelated tasks, management of schedule, escalation of issues and blockers, and documentation in project management software (Jira, or equivalent).
- Proven ability to think critically and analytically to solve problems at all phases of a project from design to installation.
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
